Osaka Competition

Yea, i will be going to Osaka this coming October for the competition, with my saxophone quartet group. We won the Thailand round last Sunday, and will join the other group for final at Osaka, from 6th till 9th.

And if you read my schedule i wrote sometime ago, i should be at KL now for the ISME. But i'm not able to make it, because...i spent most of my money for the Slovenia trip. hahaha, so i will not be able to go around for sometime.

And of course, since the Osaka trip is confirm, i must safe some money for it. Hahaha!!!

Still in the process of selecting the piece for final, but guess we will do some French Classic work. Or any composer like to write us something?

3.Slovenia

Finally got the chance to really see around. At first thought that i like Budapest so much. But only until i arrived here, i realised that i like Slovenia more. Budapest has a lot of nice decorating building, here the same. But i do like here more... Ljubljana (Capital of Slovenia) is a small town, with only 200,000+ population. (in fact, Slovenia population is only 2 million). Small town, easy to get around, nice people (pretty girl, of course), nice view, weather is good. And the most important thing is, it is quiet! Not to say 100% quiet, but compare to Bangkok or even Budapest, here is really peaceful kind of feel. Everybody walk gently, no rushing, lots of bicycle ridding, less cars...

Went to visit a lot of places, i will let the pictures tell you the story.

2. World Saxophone Congress 2006

We managed to get in to the congres site on the 5th 8pm, after more than 10 hours of bus ride. Thanks god that the view on the way there is nice! And thanks god that we finally get in to the hotel, after more than 1 hour searching in the town. Nice hotel, better than the one at Budapest, and cheaper than that. Ha

As the congress start on the 5th morning, we missed the whole day. But manage to go in for the first evening concert. Still we missed the first soloist, EUgene Rousseau! sigh!!! The second soloist is from Slovenia, nice job! Then the third one, Claude Delange (Paris Conservatoire)!!! Hoo!!! I love it so much. This is the second tme i hear him played, first time at Singapore. BUt he sounded great!!! The last soloist for the day, Zagreb Quartet. They did well, but i like their recording more. Perhaps because they played after Delange?

Second day, 6th. Rush to the congress site early morning, do the registration, and then rush for the high school nearby to get a room for quartet practise. Why? Because we are playing on that day, 11:30am! Since we arrived one day late, the rehearsal schedule also being disturb, as we only leaved that morning for a short run through. Got in to the back stage at 10:30am, did another run through, and we're on for the stage!

- MSQ at back stage -

We got a full house, around 200 peoples. Surprised! Is a small theatre style kind of auditorium, with the audience sit in a circle, surrouding the performers. Went up, did the first song 'Derives' by the winner of the Thailand International Composition Competition for Saxophone. It ended up well, and the audience love it! Second song, 'Elastic' by the thai composer... some contem, rythmic, fast running passage. Thought some mistake here and there, but still manage to end it nicely. (Check out the score! Ask me for it!) Got a huge applause from the audience. And only after we back to the back stage, my dear baritone player tell me that Jean-Marie Londeix was sitting right behind of me, looking at my music. haha, and he smiled after we played. Hoo...

Many peoples come to us to greet us, including Claude Delange, Londeix, Rousseau...and many more that we don't know their names. Feel great!!!

- MSQ (without Shyen) with Delange, after the quartet performance -

Went in for many concerts, heard lots of interesting stuff...jazz quartet (mostly bebop), contem, entertain (a group of ladies from Latvia, dancing while they play) and a lot more...There is also one concert at the Church. Playing some Back, and baroque music. NIce, peace, quite...

And we went for the Yellow Jacket show at night! Great! He did the first few tunes with his own groups, then the Slovenia Radio Big Band came in, to play some of his big band chart. Nice job, Slovenian!

Third day, 7th. The Thailand Saxophone Ensemble is going to play this day, 5:30pm. Did a rehearsal yesterday, with the composer helping to shape up his music. He is from Ukraine, and also he is the winner for the Thailand Composition Competition, for the Ensemble category. A nice man, great composer. Having to spent few days with him, he wrote me something, and teach me how to analyse some music. Guess what, he can't speak english at all. So most of the time we're like 'chicken and duck talk' But he manage to help the ensemble to shape the music more nicely. During the performance, though is not that fantastic, but it still ended up OK. ha

After us is anothe ensemble from France, and then the Mi-Bemol Saxophone Ensemble from Japan. I wanted to see their show for so long, and they never dissapoint me. They sounded great, nice music, nice arrangment, nice ensemble work...and also pretty girls! haha.

Later on, went to watched the concert, which my all time favourite saxophonist, Kenneth Tse is playing. He is great, even better than the time i met him last time, during his visit to Malaysia.

After finished the major two concerts (quartet and ensemble), most of us start to drink a bit at night. And sure, we're drunk! ahaha

Fourth day, 8th. Shyen is playing today. ANd is basically free time for me. So went on to the Selmer showroom, check out some instrument. Wow...look at the picture... i tried all the horns. hahaha!!!!

- Selmer show room -

And i even got my Yamaha EX check up, did some adjustment at the Yamaha boost, for free. And of course, i tried the Yamaha EX gold plated, and the Soprano EX as well. Thinking of getting the G1 gold neck from my alto. $$$$. Hahaha. Went to check out some instrument. Check this out, the TUBAX

Went to check out the music scores, not much... little dissappointed. Lots of ligatures, but didnt find the one i want, the 'Bay'. Tried some others, is good, but didnt really feel like getting it. ha. Finally got myself a Reed stick by Vandoreen. guess is time for me to start play around with my reed a bit...

Shyen did a great job for his show. Lots of people came, lots of greeting. And then we send the composer, he is off for another conducting gigs at ...cant remember the town name. haha. But is great to know, Mr Runchak!!!

- Shyen, keke, Mr Runchak, and CM -

Went on for the evening concert again. My favourite...Vincent David, fast, kick ass phrase, well planned solo with electronic recording. The following jazz concert was great, but the orchestra is a bit too loud, and the soloist is drunk. haha. Then here come the Arno Bornkamp. He always surprise me, from classic literature, to contem... I LOVE YOU so much!!!!

After the concert, went out with some friends. Met them during the congress, from China and Taiwan, but now at Ukraine and Paris doing their saxophone study. Talks a lot, share a lot of information, and of course, we do want to do something for the Chinese music world!

- Chinese gang at WSC -

Last day, 9th. Important day for us. As we gonna present the proposal to be the host for 2009 World Saxopone Congress. Around hundred plus of them came for the meeting. The Thailand group already have the news spread out since the first day we arrice. We have a boost, to spread out the proposal paper, as well as the 2nd Londeix Competition postcard. So many people already talking about it before the meeting.

And, we got the whole house vote for us to be the next host, Hooray! And i'm being selected to be the members of the International Committee as well. Together with me is Claude Delange, Eric Nestle, Arno Bornkamp, Daniel (if you read this, sorry for cant remember your full name) and also Julia (sorry for cant remember the full name also) Is like suddenly from an unknown saxophonist, become the members of the International Committee, what a big different! Now i'm the representative for the Thailand, as well as Southeast Asia. Mainly to solve some critical problem, like the host cant do the congress, have to find a replacement. And also to report the progress of the work and scene. After the meeting, many peoples come to greet me... wow... I'm so exciting...plus some worried. But who cares!? I will do my best! Hooray!

- Claude Delange, president of the International Committee -

Went out for dinner with Dr Sugree, Shyen's family, A.William, William Street, Eugene Rousseau and wife, Roger Greenberg, Eric Nestler, and also some other which i can't remember their name, sorry. Talked a lot, and then, farewell! See you in Bangkok, 2009!!!

1.Budapest

Why Budapest? Because we need to stop by to do the VISA to enter Slovenia. That's why, we got a free trip there! Hooray!

We were on the plane for 9 hours, from Bangkok to Istanbul, with the Turkish airline. Is not that bad though...but i really don't like long hour on the plane.

Reached Istanbul airport at 7am. Need to wait till noon for the flight to Budapest. No choice, hang around...have some food. And you know what, the Burger King there cost 8 EURO!!! Which is like 40RM!!! Damn it! But no choice, that's perhaps the cheapest food we can get!!!

We reached Budapest around 5pm later. Went to check in at the hotel...wow, not bad. Pretty girl at the reception counter that serve us. hahaha.

Nothing much to do, walk around. Nice weather, around 25C. Subway is well connected, same to the bus and train. But most of the shop close at 7pm. So we were rushing for the first day to get some burger at the food stall near the subway station, which they already preparing to close.

Second day onwards...were basically walking around, sight seeing. Of course there is some accident, where some of our members lost their money, when they were sleeping in the room! 3 of them, 500EURO... report to the police, but cant do anything else. ANd also for our VISA, supposely we plan to stay from 1st till 4th, then depart to Slovenia on the 4th. But too bad that 1st and 2nd is weekend, and we can only apply the VISA on the 3rd, and will take two days. Means we will be late for the first day for the COngress, which start on the 5th. So kinda worried, and tried to get the Hungary Ambassadors to help (which they promise to help us before hand). Luckily, we got the VISA on the 4th, and we get a bus on the 5th to SLovenia, early morning.

Is it sounds a bit un-organise? Yea, i admit that. Email me if you want to know more details on what's going on. haha, i will say, is a big joke!!!

Back to the trip, i won't say much, the only things i will say is, Budapest is great! Nice view, pretty people, warm human being, BUT, hard to get normal water, as they like to drink SODA water. haha. Here is the pictures. Check it out!

-In front of Opera House-

And, i watched the Herbie Hancook's LIVE here at Budapest. It just happend that he is there, and Milk and me went directly for it! 20EURO, worth it! And finally i know how straight they are for the pirated stuff. No camera at all, they even check your bag, one by one. Hahaha. That's why, didnt get a chance to take a picture with Herbie. The show was great! Nice outdoor stadium, with some extra bird songs, huge audience.

2006 WSC trip

It gonna be a long review for the whole trip. That's why, i'm going to split the whole trip to three parts:

1.Budapest
2.World Saxophone Congress 2006
3.Slovenia

If you think it is too long to finish, just pick one and go directly to it.

nit noi (little, in thai) update

Is now 12th 2am at Slovenia (around 7am at Bangkok, or 8am at KL). Is a bit drunk now (after 5 bottles of Slovenia's beer, 'Union') Just got out from my friends room, from the party....

It is now the last day at Slovenia, as we will take the noon flight to Istanbul, then to Bangkok. Will reach on the 13th noon. Long flight...again...

Just nit noi update for this trip... meet a lot of friend, teacher...and meet a lot of new friends and teachers also. Bought some Cds and scores, and of course accessories. And, Bangkok is now the official host for the 2009 World Saxophone Congress. Hooray!

Most important thing is, i'm now the member of the International Committee for the World Saxophone Congress, for 3 years. Together with me are Claude Delange (Paris Conservatoire), Julia (from Canada), Arno Bornkamp, Eric Nestler, and Daniel (from France). For those who know saxophone well (perhaps more to classical and contem), then you should know whose these peoples are...

Will not say too much now, as i really need a good sleep now. But one thing for sure is, there is a big changes to my life now. I will update more when i'm back at Bangkok.
